NIMS Documentation and Validation Requirements
29 Apr 2008

Operations has received several questions about what is considered proper documentation for completing NIMS training. A certificate clearly reflecting course completion is ideal, but is not the only accepted form of documentation. The e-mails or letters from the Emergency Management Institute or the National Fire Academy noting course completion would also be sufficient. So would a transcript from those organizations or a state fire college or other appropriate organization conducting NIMS training in your local area especially for courses like ICS-300 or 400 which are taken in a classroom setting. The CAP leadership just needs to be sure it clearly indicates the training completed. Some personnel may have a certificate from a police academy or something similar which includes a lot of this training, but that is not necessarily reflected on the certificate. CAP just needs something certified by the agency providing the training that these courses were completed as part of the curriculum if it isn't readily noted.

There have also been questions about whether personnel need to re-accomplish training if they have done it already. If the training was properly conducted and received, CAP does not desire that you re-do it. For example, many personnel completed G193, G195, and G196 previously which are considered equivalent courses to ICS-200, 300, and 400 respectively. As long as they were delivered and documented properly in accordance with the policy published by appropriate instructors, they would be acceptable as well. There have been some indications that some personnel only reviewed those courses, and didn't really complete them with the necessary exercises and such, and that is not appropriate or acceptable. The value derived from the course exercises and group participation is essential.
